Dr. Debby Stroman is an enthusiastic faculty member at the prestigious UNC Kenan-Flagler Business School and the Director of Sport Entrepreneurship and Community Engagement assignment at the Frank Hawkins Kenan Institute of Private Enterprise. In this role, Dr. Stroman leads the integration of Sport Business into the current curriculum and program activities. MBA courses offered include the Business & Economics of Sport and Sport Analytics. Undergraduate courses include Marketing and Media, Global Sport, and Sport Leadership. She developed and teaches the Sport Entrepreneurship (EXSS 51 & 328) courses as a part of the popular College of Arts & Science’s First Year Seminars and Entrepreneurship Minor. Stroman enjoys working with UNC’s Center for Faculty Excellence, The Atlantic Coast Conference, the College Football Playoff, and the NCAA’s Office of Inclusion on special projects. Dr. Stroman’s research interests are leadership, marketing, entrepreneurship, and social issues of sport. She is the faculty advisor for the Carolina Sport Business Club, the MBA Sports & Entertainment Club, and Sigma Alpha Lambda (a national leadership & honors society). Recent recognitions include the 2013 ‘Class of 1996 Excellence in Academic Advising’ and the 2013 General Alumni Association ‘Hortense K. McClinton Outstanding Faculty/Staff’ awards.
Prior to her appointment at UNC, Dr. Stroman successfully owned and managed her own business ventures. She is the 2006 recipient of the state of Maryland’s Top MBE Award, which recognizes leadership, business, and entrepreneurial success. She also has experience as a grant writer and fundraiser for non-profit organizations. Dr. Stroman remains entrepreneurial as the owner of LASER (Life After Sports With Effective Results™). LASER provides career coaching and transition planning to former professional athletes as they transition from their sport career. Previous employment experience includes intercollegiate athletics, the NCAA, corporate management, and financial planning. She is a former basketball player at UVA and assistant coach for the Tar Heels.
Education – University of Virginia (B.S.), University of North Carolina (M.A. Sport Administration), and Capella University (Ph.D. Business). Her dissertation title is “The Critical Success Factors of the Atlantic Coast Conference.”
