What are your current primary responsibilities?

As the Founder and Executive Chairman of Automated Insights – an artificial intelligence company that transforms big data into written reports – I’ve learned a lot about entrepreneurship and the sports business community. I recently decided to leave my position at Automated Insights so I can focus on pursuing a Computer Science Ph.D at UNC and assisting with the development of the Center of Sport Business.  My role includes helping Debbie with business strategy, teaching MBA 850 (Sport Analytics) at Kenan-Flagler, growing our partnership program, and being a consultant to our students and alumni.

What do you see as the fastest growing or most important aspect of analytics in basketball today?

We are just scratching the surface with what can be done and will be done within this space. With the vast quantities of new data that’s being collected about player and team performance, coupled with advances in artificial intelligence techniques to analyze the data, the future is very exciting.

Who do you admire? Why?

Debby Stroman is on my short list of inspirational figures in the sport business world. She’s the main reason I wanted to get involved with the Center of Sport Business.

Who is your favorite sport team(s) or athlete that you follow regularly? Why?

I am a huge UNC Tar Heel fan. I regularly attend UNC basketball, football and baseball games, but try to watch many of the other varsity teams play throughout the year when I can.

What tips do you have for a college student interested in a career in the sport industry?

Look to pursue roles that stray away from the standard jobs in the sports industry. Now, more than ever, with the advancements in technology you have the tools and resources to think outside the box. By coming up with new ways to advance those positions, you will be better suited to land a spot in the sports industry. Continue to be a forward thinker because the sports analytics industry is evolving rapidly.
